The backlog. That damned backlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, not all backlogs are bad. There\u2019s The Backlog, with Joe Walker<\/a>. That\u2019s good! But then there\u2019s the never ending backlog of video games. And that\u2019s bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My last post on Skirmish Frogs<\/a> landed to my plans for the next project I\u2019m undertaking, which is going well by the way. Slow, but good. The fact that it hasn\u2019t bit the dust like so many is a strong positive. But I digress\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I referenced in that post about my push to tackle said backlog and dive into it deeply. I also mentioned that I own many Zelda games that I have yet to play, and since it\u2019s Legend of Zelda Week here on the pond, I thought I\u2019d take some time to reflect on the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, there\u2019s not much to reflect upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, I own many Zelda games. In fact, outside of Skyward Sword and the Tri-Force Heroes, I believe I own every Legend of Zelda game that Nintendo has offered (I\u2019m not counting those crappy CD-i releases.) Now, technically, I don\u2019t own Majora\u2019s Mask on the Nintendo 64, but I did purchase the 3DS remake. And I don\u2019t have the Wii version of Twilight Princess but I own the Game Cube release. Same could be said for Wind Waker. Game Cube, yes. Wii U, no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019d think someone who owned an entire library of games would\u2019ve found the time to play said games over a period of time. That hasn\u2019t been the case to this point. In fact, here\u2019s a breakdown of which Zelda games I\u2019ve played, total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legend of Zelda (NES) (completed)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Link To the Past (SNES)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyrule Warriors (Wii U) (completed)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yup. That\u2019s it. But Oracle of Ages\/Seasons\u2026Awakening\u2026Ocarina of Time\u2026Link Between World\u2026and any and all in between\u2026they\u2019re all on the shelf, all awaiting to be played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why haven\u2019t I touched them to this point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, I know I\u2019m not the only one, but I have this STUPID thing where I\u2019m defaulted to wanting to play games in chronological order. Is there any reason to do so? Not really. It\u2019s not like if one were to play Final Fantasy IX before Final Fantasy II that any amount of storyline or understanding of the game would be different. Same could be said with the Zelda series, I suppose. Though, I have yet to play Link Between Worlds without having beat Link to the Past, because I\u2019m told there\u2019s some similarities and that \u2018it helps\u2019 having playing LttP first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my head, I\u2019ve always told myself to play (and ideally finish) Adventure of Link before moving on to Link\u2019s Awakening. Or, play Ocarina of Time before Majora\u2019s Mask, because that\u2019s how they were released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll continue to search for Skyward Sword, because despite mixed reviews, I DO want to play it some day. And that\u2019s the theme with all of the Zelda games. I eventually want to play all of them. The Legend of Zelda has been a constant in my life, directly or indirectly, over the past 30 years. I don\u2019t know as much about the land of Hyrule as most, but I intend to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll say this, playing Hyrule Warriors was a trip, because while I knew who some of the characters in the game were, I couldn\u2019t tell you what games they debuted in or how integral a role they played in each game. Sure, I had heard of them, but that\u2019s more due to conversation and reading over time as opposed to first hand experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So in an attempt to bring this full circle, as part of my goal to dig into my backlog in 2016, I\u2019m moving Zelda to the top of the priority list. The only struggle will be that I really enjoy RPG\u2019s, and those will need to be moved to the back burner in order to put a Ganon sized dent into this series. That\u2019ll be a difficult task unto itself, but one that I need to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feel like I know the Legend of Zelda pretty well, but truth be told, I don\u2019t have a clue as to what it\u2019s all about. Time to change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
